Project Tiger: monitoring tiger shark movements in the Savu Sea, Indonesia
In October 2022 I collaborated with the amazing nonprofit, Project Hiu, in Indonesia. Together, we worked with former shark fishermen to tag and release tiger sharks in the Savu Sea. This research is groundbreaking in many ways; for the first time ever, we will have tracking data on tiger sharks in these waters… all with the help of the men who used to kill these animals.
In October 2023, I headed back to Indonesia to lead the second part of this research project. We deployed 8 satellite tags on tiger sharks that are collecting data as we speak. This data will be used to inform new management in this area and to create fishing restrictions that would help protect tiger sharks from overfishing.
