Experience the thrill of shark fishing while contributing to vital research! I’m partnering with a local fishing charter in Topsail, NC to offer a unique opportunity to be a citizen scientist for the day. You’ll join scientists and professional anglers to catch, tag, and collect samples from sharks right off the coast of North Carolina.
During the trip, you’ll help reel in sharks using rod and reel, assist in collecting biological samples like tissue clips and DNA, and even participate in tagging the sharks with ID or satellite tags. You’ll also get the chance to observe how researchers use ultrasound to detect shark pups in pregnant females.

Led by Captain Anthony Procida of Grassy Sound Charters and Dr. Chelsea Black from UNC’s Institute of Marine Sciences, these trips provide an unforgettable, hands-on experience that combines adventure with scientific discovery. Whether you’re an aspiring marine biologist or just love the ocean, this is your chance to make a difference while having an incredible day on the water.
